Maggots in Wheelie Bin? How to Get Rid of Them Fast

Updated: Jan 21

Few things are as stomach-churning as lifting your wheelie bin lid and being greeted by hundreds of wriggling maggots. If this has just happened to you, take a deep breath – it's a common problem, especially in summer, and it's completely fixable.

In this guide, we'll show you exactly how to get rid of maggots in your wheelie bin, what kills them instantly, and most importantly, how to stop them coming back.

Why Are There Maggots in My Bin?

Maggots are the larvae of flies – usually common houseflies or bluebottles. Here's how they end up in your bin:

  1. Flies are attracted to the smell of rotting food and organic waste

  2. They squeeze through tiny gaps in your bin lid to get inside

  3. They lay eggs on decomposing material (a single fly can lay up to 500 eggs)

  4. Eggs hatch within 24 hours in warm conditions

  5. Maggots appear and feed on the waste for about 5-7 days before turning into flies

The whole cycle takes just 7-10 days, which is why a bin can go from clean to infested very quickly during warm weather.

What Kills Maggots Instantly?

If you need to deal with maggots right now, here are the most effective methods:

Boiling Water The fastest and cheapest solution. Boil a full kettle and pour it directly onto the maggots. The heat kills them instantly. You may need several kettles-worth for a full bin. Be careful of steam and splashing.

Salt Pour a generous amount of table salt directly onto the maggots. Salt dehydrates them and kills them within a few hours. Use at least half a bag for a heavily infested bin.

White Vinegar Mix equal parts white vinegar and boiling water. Pour into the bin. The acidity kills maggots and helps neutralise odours. This is also a good follow-up after using boiling water.

Bleach Solution Mix one part bleach with nine parts water. Pour or spray onto the maggots. This kills them and disinfects the bin. Leave for 30 minutes before rinsing. Be careful not to splash on clothes or skin.

What NOT to Use: Avoid using insecticides or fly spray inside your bin – these contain chemicals that can linger and contaminate your bin for future use.

How to Clean Your Bin After Maggots

Once you've killed the maggots, you need to clean the bin thoroughly to remove eggs, residue, and the smell that attracted flies in the first place.

Step 1: Wait for bin collection day Let your bin be emptied by the council first. This removes most of the waste and dead maggots.

Step 2: Kill any remaining maggots Pour boiling water into the empty bin. Add a cup of bleach or white vinegar. Leave for 10-15 minutes.

Step 3: Scrub the bin Using a long-handled brush (you don't want to lean in), scrub the inside of the bin – especially the bottom corners and under the rim of the lid where eggs can hide.

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly Tip out the dirty water (onto grass or gravel, not into street drains) and rinse with clean water.

Step 5: Leave to dry Leave the bin open in the sun to dry completely. UV light helps kill any remaining bacteria.

How to Prevent Maggots in Your Bin

Prevention is much easier than dealing with an infestation. Here's how to keep maggots out of your bin:

Double-bag food waste Wrap food scraps in newspaper before putting them in a bag. This adds an extra barrier and absorbs moisture that attracts flies.

Keep your bin lid closed Sounds obvious, but check your bin lid closes properly. Even small gaps let flies in. If your lid is damaged, contact your council for a replacement.

Rinse food packaging Before throwing away meat trays, tins, and containers, give them a quick rinse. Residual food is what attracts flies.

Use your food caddy If your council provides a food waste caddy with a tight-fitting lid, use it. These are collected more frequently and designed to contain smells.

Keep bins in the shade Heat accelerates decomposition and makes smells worse. If possible, store your bin in a shaded area.

Clean your bin regularly A clean bin is far less attractive to flies than a dirty one. Regular cleaning removes the residue and odours that draw them in.

Use bin fresheners Some people sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in the bottom of their bin to absorb odours. You can also buy bin deodoriser pods that stick inside the lid.

When Are Maggots Most Common?

Maggot season in the UK typically runs from late May to September, peaking in July and August when temperatures are highest.

During this period, maggots can appear within just 2-3 days of flies getting into your bin. This is why summer bin cleaning is so important – and why many of our customers opt for 2-weekly cleaning during the warmer months.

Will the Council Empty My Bin If It Has Maggots?

In most cases, yes – the bin will still be emptied. However, some councils may refuse to empty bins in extreme cases where maggots are spilling out, as this poses a health risk to collection workers.

Even after the bin is emptied, the problem won't go away on its own. Maggots leave behind residue, and fly eggs can remain stuck to the bin walls, ready to hatch into a new infestation.
